After spending a few days in the bustling city of Hanoi, we boarded the overnight train to Sapa. That journey alone was an adventure. Our boys loved sleeping on the train and woke up the next morning to stunning views of the lush green mountains of Northern Vietnam.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, we were especially excited to explore the mountainous north of the country. Sapa certainly wasn&#8217;t the quiet mountain village we had imagined. The town center was actually quite lively and touristy. After all, that&#8217;s exactly what we came to see. At the same time, we found Sapa to be more touristy than we had expected. The town center feels quite westernized, and in many places it&#8217;s clear that tourism plays a major role. Because of that, we sometimes missed the authentic atmosphere we had hoped for. Even so, we had a wonderful time here as a family. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, fun activities for children, and the peaceful surroundings among the rice terraces made Sapa absolutely worth visiting for us.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With two active elementary school-aged children, we found Sapa to be a great family destination. There was plenty to keep the kids entertained, while we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and mountain views. Looking back, <a href=\"https:\/\/localvietnam.nl\/blog\/fansipan-sapa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fansipan Mountain<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.nl\/Attraction_Review-g737052-d27171657-Reviews-Mong_Village_Alpine_Coaster_Sapa-Lao_Cai_Lao_Cai_Province.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alpine Coaster<\/a> were by far our boys&#8217; favorite experiences. We stayed in Sapa for three nights, which felt just right. Time in Sapa<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you ask our children what they enjoyed most in Sapa, Fansipan Mountain is without a doubt their number one highlight. At 3,143 meters (10,312 feet), Fansipan is the highest mountain in <a href=\"https:\/\/travelwithkids.net\/en\/vietnam-with-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vietnam <\/a>and is often called the Roof of Indochina. Even the journey to the top is an adventure. First, you take a mountain train to the cable car station, and then you soar high above the valleys all the way to the summit.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, when we reached the top, the weather wasn&#8217;t on our side. Low clouds covered the mountain, so we missed the famous panoramic views. Of course, we would have loved to see them, but honestly, our children didn&#8217;t mind at all. They thought the cable car ride, the temples, and the idea of standing on the highest mountain in Vietnam were exciting enough. The enormous Buddhist temples, impressive statues, and mysterious atmosphere among the clouds still made it a very memorable experience.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We took the funicular to the highest point and then walked back down at a relaxed pace. With our boys, aged 6 and 7, this was perfectly manageable. with kids was perhaps the simplest of all: hiking through the rice terraces. From our accommodation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/vn\/laxsik-ecolodge.nl.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/vn\/laxsik-ecolodge.nl.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Laxsik Ecolodge<\/a>, you can walk straight into nature. Narrow trails lead you through the rice fields to a small local village in the valley below. Along the way, you&#8217;re rewarded with stunning views of the lush green hills that make Sapa so famous. For our children, this felt like a real adventure. They climbed along the trails, marveled at the rice terraces, and loved having so much space to explore.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, this was one of the moments when Sapa made the biggest impression. During this walk, we truly felt surrounded by the iconic rice terraces that had drawn us all the way to Northern Vietnam. The views from the hills were exactly what we had hoped to experience.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing to keep in mind: what goes down must also come back up. The return hike is much more challenging because it&#8217;s uphill. Our boys handled it well, but it may be tough for younger children. The Alpine Coaster turned out to be an instant hit. This mountain coaster lets you race down the hillside on your own sled, while controlling your own speed. That makes it exciting without being too scary. Our boys wanted to go again as soon as they reached the bottom.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We bought tickets for three rides, which turned out to be the perfect choice. During the first run, the kids needed a little time to get used to the track. After that, they literally let go of the brakes and raced down the mountain with huge smiles on their faces. Many websites describe it as a traditional village of the Hmong people. We found it to be more of a tourist attraction, but that&#8217;s not necessarily a downside\u2014as long as you know what to expect.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The walking route takes you past souvenir shops, viewpoints, waterfalls, and plenty of photo spots. Our children especially enjoyed exploring the different corners of the village and seeing what was around each bend. One important tip: pay attention to which entrance you use. We entered through Entrance 1, where the route starts with a long downhill walk featuring a huge number of stairs. That can be quite challenging for younger children. Fortunately, you don&#8217;t have to climb all the way back up. You can leave via Entrance 2 and, from there, take the little train, which saves you from walking most of the uphill climb. With kids, that&#8217;s definitely the easier option.         <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you reach the bottom, you&#8217;ll find several restaurants, scenic viewpoints, and pleasant places to take a break. The absolute highlight for our boys was the Rainbow Slide. This colorful slide was a huge success. You&#8217;ll find giant statues, artistic installations, and decorative backdrops that you&#8217;ve probably seen on Instagram. There isn&#8217;t a huge amount for children to do here. Our boys enjoyed walking around and taking a few funny photos, but after about an hour, they were ready to move on.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you enjoy photography or want to take beautiful vacation pictures, it&#8217;s definitely worth a visit. While Hanoi immersed us in local daily life, Sapa feels much more geared toward tourists. That has both advantages and disadvantages. Restaurant menus are often available in English, dining options are family-friendly, and getting around with children is easy. At the same time, we sometimes missed the authentic atmosphere we had been hoping to experience.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we visited, the start of the tourist season was celebrated with a three-day festival. The streets were filled with performances, market stalls, and even fireworks in the evenings. After arriving on the overnight train, we reached the hotel at around 7:00 a.m. Although our room wasn&#8217;t ready yet, we received a very warm welcome. We were able to leave our luggage, enjoy a relaxed breakfast, and take in the stunning views while we waited.   <br\/><br\/>We stayed in a spacious bungalow with two bedrooms and a separate living room. From almost every corner of the resort, you have breathtaking views of the surrounding rice terraces. It was a view we never got tired of. The swimming pool was a big hit with our children, and after a day of sightseeing, it was the perfect place to cool off and relax.   <br\/><br\/>The only thing to keep in mind is the location. The hotel isn&#8217;t in the center of Sapa. If you&#8217;re looking for restaurants and shops within walking distance, this may not be the best choice. However, it&#8217;s easy and inexpensive to take a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grab.com\/sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Grab <\/a>into town. To be honest, we almost walked right past it. From the outside, it doesn&#8217;t immediately look like a place where you&#8217;d expect an amazing meal. Don&#8217;t let that fool you. The food was absolutely delicious. The menu offers a wide selection of both Vietnamese and Western dishes, so there&#8217;s something for everyone. We especially loved the Vietnamese specialties.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">N\u01b0\u1edbng Ng\u00f3i Gia B\u1ea3o Sapa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a surprisingly fun dining experience for families visiting Sapa with kids. Here, you cook your own meat, vegetables, and other dishes right at your table. It&#8217;s a bit like Korean BBQ or tabletop grilling, but with a Vietnamese twist. Our children loved preparing their own food on the hot grill, which turned dinner into an activity in itself. want to see and do in Sapa with kids. We visited during the May holiday and thought it was a great time to go. The weather wasn&#8217;t too hot for the various activities and hikes. However, the rice terraces were not yet at their greenest. So don&#8217;t expect to immediately see the bright green rice fields that you often see in photos of Sapa.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, we actually loved the different colors in the landscape. It gave the surroundings a unique character and atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transportation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like during the rest of our trip through <a href=\"https:\/\/travelwithkids.net\/en\/vietnam-with-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vietnam<\/a>, we used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grab.com\/sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Grab <\/a>frequently in Sapa. It worked extremely well and was the easiest way for us to get around. It is affordable, easy to use, and you don&#8217;t have to negotiate prices. Especially after a long hike, when you don&#8217;t feel like walking back uphill, it&#8217;s great to be able to quickly book a ride.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long to stay?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stayed in Sapa for three nights and found that to be perfect. This gives you enough time to visit Fansipan, ride the Alpine Coaster, explore Cat Cat Village, hike through the rice terraces, and still have some time to relax by the pool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Get There?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We traveled from Hanoi to Sapa by overnight train and booked a private cabin with <a href=\"https:\/\/chapaexpresstrain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chapa Express<\/a>. This turned out to be an excellent choice. The train was clean, comfortable, and surprisingly luxurious. Our boys loved sleeping in bunk beds, and for us, it was a relaxing way to cover a long distance. It also meant we saved the cost of one hotel night.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Hanoi, the journey takes around eight hours. After arriving at the train station, you still need to travel a little further to reach Sapa. We chose a private transfer for the final part of the journey. It was comfortable and, after a night on the train, a very welcome option. For younger children, a baby carrier is often a more convenient option. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always bring an extra sweater or jacket. We started in Hanoi and traveled north from there by overnight train. After three nights in Sapa with kids, we continued our journey to Ninh Binh, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/travelwithkids.net\/en\/hoi-an-with-kids-da-nang-tips-activities-and-where-to-stay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hoi An<\/a>. We eventually ended our trip back in Hanoi.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although we absolutely loved our time in Sapa, on a future trip through Vietnam we would carefully consider again whether to include this destination. Sapa is quite far off the route if you are traveling from Hanoi further south toward central and southern Vietnam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would we travel all the way to northern Vietnam again just for Sapa? We honestly aren&#8217;t sure. But when we look back on our trip, the days spent among the rice terraces, the journey up to Fansipan, and the excitement of our boys on the Alpine Coaster are exactly the memories that have stayed with us.
