12 Fun Things to Do in Malta’s Silent City

Mdina, also known as Malta’s “Silent City,” is one of the most special places on the island. This medieval city sits on a hill in the center of Malta and is known for its narrow streets, impressive city walls, and peaceful atmosphere. Visiting Mdina with kids feels a bit like stepping onto a movie set. Cars are barely allowed here, so children can wander around freely while you enjoy the beautiful architecture and the views over the island.

Combine your visit to Mdina with the nearby city of Rabat, where you’ll find Roman catacombs and charming streets. Together they make a perfect day trip during a holiday in Malta with kids.

The history of Mdina

Mdina has a history that goes back more than 4,000 years. The city began as a Phoenician settlement and was later fortified by the Romans. In the 9th century, the Arabs gave the city the name “Medina,” which literally means “walled city.” During the Middle Ages, Mdina was even the capital of Malta. This changed in the 16th century when the Knights of Malta built the new capital, Valletta. Since then, Mdina has been known as the peaceful and historic “Silent City.”

Get Lost in the Narrow Streets

One of the best things to do in Mdina with kids is simply to wander around. The city is a maze of narrow streets, hidden squares, and beautiful historic buildings. Because Mdina is almost completely car-free, kids can safely run around while you enjoy the atmosphere. Fun spots to look for:

  • the famous Blue Mdina Door
  • the flower bench
  • the horse-drawn carriages on the main street

You can find the exact locations of these places on my Google Maps map: Malta with Kids. Tip: make sure to explore the small side streets as well. They’re often much quieter than the main route.
