This year, we took a trip to a destination that had long been at the top of our bucket list: Vietnam! From Ho Chi Minh City, we embarked on a three-week journey from the south to the north of this beautiful country. Our trip began with a few rainy days in the south, which was initially disappointing and didn’t quite match the Vietnam we had envisioned. But our perspective quickly changed when we reached the central and northern parts of the country. Here, we were treated to incredibly beautiful nature, delightful weather, and especially the enchanting Vietnamese culture. We had never had so much fun tasting local food as we did here, and we were greeted everywhere with curious smiles.
If you’re considering traveling to Vietnam with children, I’d like to share some valuable tips with you. So, keep reading!

Southern Vietnam with children
Although it may not be the most iconic part of Vietnam, the south offers a range of experiences you shouldn’t miss. So be sure to spend some time here, but save most of your travel days for the central and northern regions of Vietnam.
Cu Chi Tunnels
Start your journey with an enlightening look into the history of the Vietnam War. The Cu Chi Tunnels are an underground network of narrow passages used by the Viet Cong. Here, you can not only learn about the history of the war but also explore the tunnels and even try out some shooting exercises.
Mekong Delta
Step aboard a traditional sampan and explore the picturesque waterways of the Mekong Delta. You’ll be amazed by the floating markets, colorful stilt houses, and lush rice fields that you encounter along the way. This is a great opportunity to experience the daily life of the local people.
Mui Ne
If you’re looking for relaxation by the beach, Mui Ne is the perfect spot. Here, you can enjoy miles of sandy beaches, try windsurfing or kitesurfing, and explore the mysterious red and white sand dunes. It’s also a great place to savor fresh seafood at local restaurants.
Central Vietnam with children
Central Vietnam is a treasure trove of cultural gems and natural beauty. Here are some highlights you must experience:
Hoi An
This charming town is known for its atmospheric old town, which is illuminated by colorful lanterns in the evening. Stroll along the historic streets, admire the Japanese covered bridge, and enjoy delicious local dishes at the many restaurants.

Ba Na Hills offers spectacular views from a French mountain resort, complete with a ‘Golden Bridge.’ My Son Sanctuary is a sacred site featuring ancient Cham temples deep in the jungle. These destinations provide both adventure and historical splendor.

Northern Vietnam with children
Northern Vietnam is breathtaking and offers unique experiences for families:

You can find even more stunning limestone rock formations in Khao Sok National Park in Thailand.

Halong Bay
This enchanting bay, with thousands of limestone islands, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit destination. Take a day trip from Hanoi or enjoy a magical overnight stay on a cruise ship.
Hanoi
The vibrant capital of Vietnam has a rich history and culture. Visit the gigantic night markets in the old town during a weekend stay and savor delicious street food.
Sapa
This is a dream for adventurous families. Hike in Lao Cai, take the funicular to the top of Fansipan (the highest mountain in Indochina) for an unforgettable view, and explore the enchanting Silver and Love waterfalls in the area.

Vietnam has stolen our hearts, and we had the trip of a lifetime with our children. The hospitality, natural beauty, and rich culture of Vietnam have left an indelible impression on us.
