Tips for traveling with children - The right expectations

Realize that a holiday with children won’t always be easy and calm, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it. It’s important to stay realistic and be open to new experiences. While traveling, we often have high expectations. We want everything to go smoothly and for everyone to have a good time. But we must understand that not everything will always go as planned. The weather can be unpredictable, accommodations may differ from what we expected, and children can behave differently. It’s important to be flexible and enjoy the moment, knowing that things won’t always be perfect.

Tips for traveling with children - 8 ultimate tips!

With realistic expectations and the following eight tips for traveling with children, you are guaranteed an unforgettable family adventure.

Be flexible

Flexibility is key. Be prepared to adjust your travel plans and improvise when necessary. The ability to enjoy unexpected moments will enrich the travel experience for everyone.

Involve children in the planning

Involving your children in the trip planning can also help prepare them for what’s to come and give them a sense of ownership. Give them the opportunity to make choices, such as selecting a museum or playground they want to visit. Of course, as a parent, you can determine the final plan, but by valuing their input, they will feel engaged and excited about the holiday.

Prepare the children

Take plenty of time before you leave to talk to your children about the trip. Explain what you will be doing and why it is so special. Discuss the details, such as the duration of the flight, so they have an idea of what to expect. Encourage them to think about what they want to bring in their special toiletry bag for the flight. This gives children a sense of control and comfort during the flight. As long as it fits in the bag, it can come along.

Pack together

Involve the children in packing! Let them gather their own clothes and toiletries so they know what they are bringing. You can also remind them that a heavy suitcase is harder to carry. Download our free packing lists from our website for an organized packing adventure.

Gifts for the journey

Another valuable tip is to buy and pack some new toys that they will only receive on the plane. Think of a coloring book, a games book with markers or pens, a Lego building set, or a sketchbook. The element of surprise and the novelty of the toys will increase their enthusiasm and keep them occupied during the journey.

Make activities fun for everyone

Not all family members have the same interests. Therefore, try to schedule activities that are enjoyable for everyone. If some family members are less enthusiastic, make the activity more adventurous and interesting. Turn a walk into a fun scavenger hunt or count different flowers you encounter along the way. This way, you ensure that everyone stays engaged and excited.

Schedule playtime

It is important to schedule enough time for play. Overloaded schedules can be exhausting, especially for children. Allow room for spontaneity and give them the opportunity to play in a playground or just with their favorite toys. They often don’t need much to entertain themselves, so try not to take too many items with you.

Conscious enjoyment

Finally, don’t forget to emphasize how wonderful and educational it is to travel as a family. Point out the new experiences, the people they meet, and the beautiful places they discover. Show them that the world is vast and that there is so much to learn and explore.

About Fairouz

We are a family of Faouzi, Fairouz, and our three wonderful children: a 9-year-old daughter, an 8-year-old son, and a 3-year-old son. Before we had children, we already had a deep-rooted passion for traveling. We enjoyed discovering new cultures, exploring breathtaking landscapes, and creating unforgettable experiences.

When we had our first child, some people thought that parenthood would mean the end of our adventurous travels, especially to far-off destinations. However, instead, we discovered that traveling with children was not only possible but also made our journeys even more fun and special. Seeing the world through their eyes and sharing new discoveries with them added a whole new dimension to our travel experiences.

Our trips with children

Shortly after the arrival of our second child, we decided to embark on long-distance travels again. Whenever we shared our travel plans with others, we often received the same question: “Are the kids coming with you, or are you leaving them behind?” And our answer was always the same: we are taking our children with us. This often led to admiration and amazement, with people telling us they wouldn’t have the courage to travel with their kids. But we did it anyway.

Our family, friends, and acquaintances were so inspired by our adventures that they began asking us more frequently to share our experiences. They wanted to know how we managed to travel with kids and were eager to explore the world with their own families. It was from this motivation that we started sharing our story, tips, and inspiration.

We look back proudly on the beautiful journeys we’ve already made to destinations such as Malaysia, America, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. And we have many more adventures ahead, including an exciting backpacking trip through Southeast Asia.
