Another must-visit destination is Ella, where you can experience the true backpacker vibe. Stay in small ‘hotels’ run by friendly families. A general tip for traveling in Sri Lanka is not to make the distances too great. It’s better to explore a small part of the country thoroughly than to cover a large area with long distances. By focusing on a specific region, you can dive deeper into the culture and attractions and really take the time to discover everything.

Sri Lanka with children - Book a night flight

When it comes to flights, we recommend booking night flights. It’s much better to take a night flight of 8 hours than a day flight of 4 hours. Additionally, it’s wise to reserve seats at the back of the plane. There are often fewer passengers there, giving you a better chance of having an extra seat, allowing you to sleep more comfortably and arrive refreshed.

Don’t forget to alternate culture, cities, and nature with relaxation on the beach. Traveling can be quite tiring, especially with children. That’s why it’s important to also schedule some time to relax on a beautiful beach or by a pool. Sometimes, doing nothing and enjoying the surroundings is exactly what you need.

About Sanne

We are Joep (40), Sanne (37), and Sophie (8). We love to travel and discover new places both in the Netherlands and abroad.

In 2019, we made our first round-the-world trip together and visited countries such as Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Tonga, Canada, and Cuba. During school holidays, we also try to discover new countries closer to home (like Albania, Montenegro, and Iceland). However, we definitely travel further away too; for example, we visited the Seychelles during one Christmas holiday and Mauritius during the last May holiday. In between these trips, we try to explore the Netherlands further every weekend because our country is also super beautiful and enjoyable to visit!

But the most exciting prospect is our round-the-world trip that we are going to take from July 2023 to February 2024. We will be visiting countries like Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Martinique. We are really looking forward to exploring these countries and, more importantly, making new memories together!
