Alhambra with children - about Alhambra

Alhambra, an enchanting complex located in the heart of Granada, is a historical masterpiece that has fascinated travelers and visitors from around the world for centuries. This breathtaking site, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is a treasure trove of Moorish architecture, lush gardens, and fascinating history.

The history of Alhambra dates back to the 9th century when it started as a small fortress on the hills of Granada. Over the centuries, it expanded into a vast complex that served as a Moorish palace, a military stronghold, and eventually the royal residence of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain.

The most striking part of Alhambra is the Nasrid Palace, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture featuring beautiful courtyards, lush rooms, and intricate mosaics that stimulate the senses. The Alcazaba, an ancient citadel, dominates the skyline and offers spectacular views of the city of Granada.

In addition to its architectural splendor, Alhambra is also famous for its enchanting gardens, such as the Generalife Gardens. Here, you can wander among fragrant flowers, fountains, and graceful water channels, while enjoying the tranquility and beauty of nature.

The blend of Islamic and Spanish influences in Alhambra reflects Spain’s rich history and cultural diversity. It is a place where you can lose yourself in time, immersing in the splendor and grandeur of a bygone era.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply seeking a magical destination for the whole family, Alhambra is sure to enchant you. It’s a place where past and present converge, allowing you to appreciate the beauty and grandeur of one of the world’s most remarkable historical treasures.

Alhambra with children - Plan your visit in advance

Alhambra is a popular destination, and tickets sell out quickly. It is therefore essential to order your tickets well in advance, at least 3 weeks before your visit. During peak season, it may be wise to book even earlier. If you don’t, there’s a good chance that you’ll miss out, and no online tickets will be available. We booked our tickets two weeks in advance (outside school holidays), and there were only a few time slots (in the evening) left.

It’s always possible to buy a limited number of tickets at the ticket office on the day of your visit. However, the queue can get quite long, and after a few hours of waiting, you might end up empty-handed. Not ideal, especially when traveling with kids. So the most important tip: buy your tickets in advance!

We ordered our tickets online through GetyourGuide.nl, and the process went smoothly and without any issues.

Alhambra with children - The Nasrid Palace

Be sure to visit the Nasrid Palace: This palace is definitely a highlight of your visit to Alhambra with children. But note: access to the Nasrid Palace is not included in the standard Alhambra tickets; you must purchase this access separately. With the tickets, you have access to the entire Alhambra complex for the whole day, but you will have a predetermined time slot in which you may visit the Nasrid Palace. Keep in mind that you will need approximately 4 hours to explore the entire complex.

This palace features stunning architecture and enchanting details that can even fascinate children. As you stroll through the hallways and courtyards, you’ll feel like a royal family. Don’t forget to share the history of the palace with your children and let them imagine what life must have been like in the past.

Alhambra with children - the stroller is allowed

The grounds of Alhambra are extensive, and exploring all the sights can be tiring for little ones if they have to walk too much. It’s handy to bring a stroller so the children can rest from time to time. However, keep in mind that strollers are not allowed inside the palaces. Lockers are available at the entrance of the palace where you can safely store the stroller during your visit to the palaces.
