Gibraltar with children- practical information
Transportation
If you visit Gibraltar with children, you will likely be on vacation in Spain. We combined our visit to Gibraltar with our tour of Andalusia with children, where we visited the Alhambra, among other places. However, we also highly recommend a weekend in Gibraltar!
By plane: Unfortunately, Gibraltar cannot be reached with a direct flight from the Netherlands. You will always have a layover in the United Kingdom. Of course, you can also fly to other Spanish cities, such as Malaga or Seville.
By bus: There are regular bus connections from Spanish cities such as La Línea, Algeciras, and Malaga to Gibraltar.
By car: If you’re coming from Spain, you can reach Gibraltar by car via the border crossing at La Línea de la Concepción. Keep in mind that there can sometimes be waiting times at the border control, especially during busy periods.
Parking
Another option is to park your car in La Línea de la Concepción and walk into Gibraltar. From the border crossing, it takes about half an hour to walk to the cable car station.
Parking in Gibraltar can sometimes be a challenge due to the limited space on the peninsula. We parked at the Cable Car Parking Lot, located at the base of the cable car. Note that there are different colored parking spaces: white spaces are free, blue spaces require payment, and yellow spaces are reserved for residents of Gibraltar.
If you plan to visit Gibraltar during busy tourist seasons, try to arrive early to avoid parking issues.
Hotels
Most hotels in Gibraltar are very expensive. Therefore, we chose to find a hotel outside of Gibraltar. We stayed at the beautiful Guadacorte Park, just a 15-minute drive from Gibraltar. If you prefer to stay in Gibraltar itself, then Sunborn Gibraltar and The Eliott Hotel are recommended.

GIBRALTAR WITH CHILDREN – ROCK OF GIBRALTAR
A visit to Gibraltar with children is not complete without a trip to the famous “Rock of Gibraltar.” The Gibraltar Nature Reserve (which encompasses the entire rock) is an area where you can easily entertain yourself all day long.
Cable car
To get to the top of the Rock, take the cable car. The day starts off well for the kids! At the cable car station below, there will be many people trying to convince you to take a van up instead. They will try to persuade you that it’s faster, that there are no more tickets for the cable car, or that driving is cheaper. Don’t let them talk you out of it; none of this is true, and taking the cable car is just way more fun!
Once you arrive at the top, you’ll be amazed by the panoramic view. And watch out: you’ll immediately see curious and sometimes cheeky monkeys walking around everywhere. It’s wise not to bring any food, as the monkeys know exactly how to find bags with food. We only brought drinks, and luckily, we didn’t have any trouble with the mischievous monkeys.
You can choose to take the cable car back down or enjoy a beautiful walk down the rock. You can bring the stroller up in the cable car, but the walk down is definitely not stroller-friendly (we know this from experience ;-))!

Skywalk Gibraltar
Take a fun family photo on the Skywalk Gibraltar, a glass platform that makes you feel like you’re hovering above the abyss.

The Cave of St. Michael
Another interesting place to explore on the Rock is St. Michael’s Cave. This is a spectacular limestone cave that creates a magical atmosphere with its stalactites and stalagmites. The lighting and music played in the cave add to its beauty, creating an experience like no other! Sit on the benches and enjoy a wonderful light and sound show in this unique location. Lizzy couldn’t get enough and wanted to walk the entire route through the cave again.
Note: not stroller-friendly. The walk is only a few hundred meters.

Gibraltar with children – Dolphin watching
A dream for children (and parents): dolphin watching. In the bay of Gibraltar, there is a great chance of seeing dolphins. Below you will find an overview of tours you can book. Your children will love spotting dolphins swimming and jumping around the boat. It’s an experience they won’t forget anytime soon!
Gibraltar with children – Charming streets, restaurants, and shops
Stroll through the charming streets of Gibraltar and discover cozy restaurants and shops. Taste the local cuisine and enjoy tapas and delicious seafood. For the kids, there are many family-friendly restaurants with a varied menu.

We truly recommend Gibraltar with children: the cable car, monkeys, a fairy-tale cave, and dolphins. What more could a child want? Definitely visit if you’re in southern Spain!
