But be warned: the bridge sways quite a bit, so if you have a fear of heights, it might not be the best place for you!

In this blog, I share our experience and all the practical tips you need for an exciting day at one of the longest suspension bridges in Germany.

The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany - Accessibility and parking

From the Netherlands, it’s about a 350-kilometer drive to the Geierlay suspension bridge in Germany. For us, the bridge was one of the stops during our road trip through Germany. We decided to stay overnight nearby and visit the bridge early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Especially during the high season, it can get quite busy here. There is no parking directly at the bridge, but about a kilometer away, you’ll find parking lot P1 Wanderer-Parkplatz Sosberg HΓ€ngeseilbrΓΌcke Geierlay. It costs 6 euros for 4 hours, and from there, you can walk along a paved path (stroller-friendly) to the suspension bridge in about 15 minutes.

The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany - the bridge

Once we arrived at the suspension bridge, we were overwhelmed by its height and length. The kids were wide-eyed and couldn’t wait to walk across. It’s important to know that the bridge sways and shakes quite a bit, especially when many people are walking on it. I found this quite unsettling! Fortunately, I’m not afraid of heights, but Lizzy didn’t like it at all and wanted to get off quickly.

From the middle of the bridge, you get the best view and can fully experience the bridge. The view is stunning, and you see the surroundings from a completely different perspective. We took some photos and enjoyed the scenery (except for Lizzy πŸ™ ). If you want, you can walk to the other side of the bridge. For some, it’s an exciting experience, but definitely very cool. If you’re a bit adventurous and don’t mind hovering high above the ground, it’s definitely worth visiting the bridge.

There are several hiking trails available near the suspension bridge, so if you have some extra time, it’s definitely worth taking a nice walk. Be sure to walk a bit downhill as well to get a beautiful panoramic view of the bridge. To do this, take the path to the right just before the bridge, and after about 150 meters, you’ll have a great view of the entire bridge.

The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany - facilities

There are no toilets at the suspension bridge, so it’s advisable to use the restroom beforehand. At the parking lot, we noticed that toilets were under construction, so this may improve in the future.

At the bridge, there is a food truck where you can buy snacks and drinks. The kids enjoyed a tasty German bratwurst here before we walked back to the parking lot.

The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany - final tips

If you plan to visit the Geierlay suspension bridge in Germany, here are a few tips that may be helpful:

  • β™₯ Go early in the morning or later in the day when it’s less crowded. Choose your season wisely; we were there in winter, which made everything bare, but we had a clear view from the bridge. In summer, the surroundings are beautifully green, but I think the area looks the most stunning in autumn!
  • β™₯ Wear sturdy shoes, as the path to the bridge can be uneven at times, especially if it has rained. The walk to the bridge is stroller-friendly, but it can be a bit bumpy and challenging at times.
  • β™₯ Bring plenty of water and snacks, especially if you plan to hike longer in the area.
  • β™₯ Keep in mind that the bridge sways quite a bit, so if you have a fear of heights, it may not be the best place for you or your kids. Of course, you can still enjoy a beautiful view of the bridge if you’re not brave enough to walk on it.
  • β™₯ Combine your visit to the Geierlay suspension bridge with a trip to Cochem, a charming town in the Moselle region.
