Inspiring family: traveling through Europe with a camper

5 tips for a holiday in Scotland with children

Meet Keri, Marc, and Flin, an intriguing family that explores Europe in their camper each year, accompanied by their loyal dogs and cat. With Flin’s first camper trip at just 2 months old, they haven’t skipped a year since and have traveled through 29 countries. They exchanged their home in Rotterdam for a simpler life, allowing them to go on adventures for six months each year.

These travelers share their story and favorite things to do for a holiday in Scotland with children in this blog.

Let me introduce

We are Keri, Marc, and Flin (5 years old), and together with our 2 dogs Mo & Diesel and our cat Radder, we travel for 6 months each year with our camper through Europe. Flin took his first camper trip when he was 2 months old, and he enjoyed it so much that we haven’t skipped a year since then. Flin has already visited 29 countries with the camper. Not long ago, we sold our house in Rotterdam and bought a cheaper one so that we can do more and have to do less. While traveling, Marc continues to work but plans it in such a way that we can still go out together every day. I (Keri) am with Flin full-time both at home and while traveling since he doesn’t go to school.

Our most beautiful trips - traveling through Europe with a camper

It’s almost impossible to pinpoint our favorite destination. Every country has something unique to offer. During each trip, we experience so many special things, which certainly shapes the journey. I will never forget our trip to Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, and Greece last autumn/winter because it was the trip where we found Radder in the streets of Kotor, Montenegro. Our most beautiful souvenir ever.

Scotland with children - tips

For a long time, we said that Norway was our most impressive destination ever, but after last year, I can add Scotland (and actually also England) to that list! Seeing puffins and orcas certainly contributed to this. We don’t often visit a destination twice, but I know for sure that we will return to Scotland; this country has so much to offer, and I think very few people realize that.

So, if you are going to Scotland with children, here are five tips:

1. In Scotland, there is “the right to roam,” which allows you to wild camp with your tent or camper.
2. For the most beautiful scenic route, drive the North Coast 500.
3. The most beautiful hike we did was at Quiraing on the Isle of Skye.
4. Spot orcas, puffins, and seals in Orkney.
5. Visit one of the many castles, such as Dunrobin Castle with its birds of prey show.

I started our Instagram account to inspire people (with children) to travel with a camper, but also to show that you can reach just as beautiful places with a ‘classic white’ camper like ours as you can with a converted trendy bus or truck. By now, we mainly share a lot of tips, such as for overnight spots, the most scenic routes, the best hikes with children, as well as essentials for the camper or tips for traveling with pets.

Our future plans

We still have a number of countries on our wishlist, but in the meantime, we have already seen so much. I don’t rule out the possibility that at some point we might exchange the camper for a plane ticket and head towards Asia or Australia/New Zealand (and perhaps buy a camper there again). For now, the next plan is to travel with the camper to the Canary Islands for 5 months in October. I hope we can maintain this balance of living in our house for 6 months and traveling for 6 months for a long time, as long as everyone continues to be happy with it.
