Gibraltar with children: a unique destination full of adventure and fascinating sights for the whole family! Gibraltar is a small peninsula located in the southwest of Europe, bordering Spain. But it has so much to offer. We were there for a day and regretted having to leave. Gibraltar is a place where you can easily spend two days entertaining children.

Gibraltar with children- practical information

Transportation

When visiting Gibraltar with children, you’ll likely be on vacation in Spain. We combined our visit to Gibraltar with our family road trip through Andalusia, where we also visited the Alhambra. However, we truly recommend spending a weekend in Gibraltar as well!

By plane: Unfortunately, Gibraltar cannot be reached with a direct flight from the Netherlands. You will always have a layover in the United Kingdom. Of course, you can also fly to other Spanish cities, such as Malaga or Seville.

By bus: There are regular bus connections from Spanish cities such as La LΓnea, Algeciras, and Malaga to Gibraltar.

By car: If you’re coming from Spain, you can reach Gibraltar by car via the border crossing at La LΓnea de la ConcepciΓ³n. Keep in mind that there can sometimes be waiting times at the border control, especially during busy periods.

Parking

Another option is to park your car in La LΓnea de la ConcepciΓ³n and walk into Gibraltar. From the border crossing, it takes about half an hour to walk to the cable car station.

Parking in Gibraltar can sometimes be a challenge due to the limited space on the peninsula. We parked at the Cable Car Parking Lot, located at the base of the cable car. Note that there are different colored parking spaces: white spaces are free, blue spaces require payment, and yellow spaces are reserved for residents of Gibraltar.

If you plan to visit Gibraltar during busy tourist seasons, try to arrive early to avoid parking issues.

Hotels

Most hotels in Gibraltar are quite expensive, so we chose to look for a hotel outside Gibraltar. We stayed at the beautiful Guadacorte Park, which is a 15-minute drive from Gibraltar. If you prefer to stay in Gibraltar itself, we recommend Sunborn Gibraltar and The Eliott Hotel.

GIBRALTAR WITH CHILDREN - ROCK OF GIBRALTAR

A visit to Gibraltar with children is not complete without a trip to the famous “Rock of Gibraltar.” The Gibraltar Nature Reserve (which encompasses the entire rock) is an area where you can easily entertain yourself all day long.

Cable car

To get to the top of the Rock, take the cable car. The day starts off well for the kids! At the cable car station below, there will be many people trying to convince you to take a van up instead. They will try to persuade you that it’s faster, that there are no more tickets for the cable car, or that driving is cheaper. Don’t let them talk you out of it; none of this is true, and taking the cable car is just way more fun!

Once you arrive at the top, you’ll be amazed by the panoramic view. And watch out: you’ll immediately see curious and sometimes cheeky monkeys walking around everywhere. It’s wise not to bring any food, as the monkeys know exactly how to find bags with food. We only brought drinks, and luckily, we didn’t have any trouble with the mischievous monkeys.

You can choose to take the cable car back down or enjoy a beautiful walk down the rock. You can bring the stroller up in the cable car, but the walk down is definitely not stroller-friendly (we know this from experience ;-))!

Skywalk Gibraltar

Take a fun family photo on the Skywalk Gibraltar, a glass platform that makes you feel like you’re hovering above the abyss.

The Cave of St. Michael

Another interesting place to explore on the Rock is St. Michael’s Cave. This is a spectacular limestone cave that creates a magical atmosphere with its stalactites and stalagmites. The lighting and music played in the cave add to its beauty, creating an experience like no other! Sit on the benches and enjoy a wonderful light and sound show in this unique location. Lizzy couldn’t get enough and wanted to walk the entire route through the cave again.

Note: not stroller-friendly. The walk is only a few hundred meters.
