The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany – Accessibility and parking

The Geierlay suspension bridge is located in the Hunsrück region, near the village of Mörsdorf. It’s easily accessible from several major German cities and is often combined with a road trip through Germany.
For reference:
Frankfurt am Main – approx. 95 km
Koblenz – approx. 50 km
Cologne – approx. 130 km
For us, the bridge was one of the stops during our road trip through Germany. We chose to stay overnight nearby and visit the bridge early in the morning, before it got too busy. Especially during peak season, this area can become very crowded.

There is no parking directly at the bridge itself. Instead, you can park at P1 Wanderer-Parkplatz Sosberg Hängeseilbrücke Geierlay, located just over one kilometre away. Parking costs €6 for 4 hours, and from here it’s about a 15-minute walk to the suspension bridge along a paved, stroller-friendly path.

The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany – the bridge

Once we arrived at the suspension bridge, we were overwhelmed by its height and length. The kids were wide-eyed and couldn’t wait to walk across. It’s important to know that the bridge sways and shakes quite a bit, especially when many people are walking on it. I found this quite unsettling! Fortunately, I’m not afraid of heights, but Lizzy didn’t like it at all and wanted to get off quickly.

From the middle of the bridge, you get the best view and can fully experience the bridge. The view is stunning, and you see the surroundings from a completely different perspective. We took some photos and enjoyed the scenery (except for Lizzy 🙁 ). If you want, you can walk to the other side of the bridge. For some, it’s an exciting experience, but definitely very cool. If you’re a bit adventurous and don’t mind hovering high above the ground, it’s definitely worth visiting the bridge.

There are several hiking trails available near the suspension bridge, so if you have some extra time, it’s definitely worth taking a nice walk. Be sure to walk a bit downhill as well to get a beautiful panoramic view of the bridge. To do this, take the path to the right just before the bridge, and after about 150 meters, you’ll have a great view of the entire bridge.

The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany – facilities

There are no toilets at the suspension bridge, so it’s advisable to use the restroom beforehand. At the parking lot, we noticed that toilets were under construction, so this may improve in the future.

At the bridge, there is a food truck where you can buy snacks and drinks. The kids enjoyed a tasty German bratwurst here before we walked back to the parking lot.

The Geierlay suspension bridge Germany – final tips

If you plan to visit the Geierlay suspension bridge in Germany, here are a few tips that may be helpful:

  • Visit early in the morning or later in the day, when it’s less crowded. Also choose your season wisely: we visited in winter, when the landscape was bare but the views from the bridge were wide and open. In summer the area is beautifully green, but autumn is probably the most scenic of all.
  • Wear sturdy shoes, as the path to the bridge can be uneven in places, especially after rain. The walk is stroller-friendly, but it can feel a bit bumpy and slightly challenging at times.
  • Bring enough water and snacks, especially if you plan to do a longer walk in the surrounding area.
  • Keep in mind that the bridge does wobble quite a bit. If you or your children are afraid of heights, this might not be the best experience. That said, you can still enjoy great views of the bridge from the surrounding viewpoints without crossing it.
  • Combine your visit to the Geierlay suspension bridge with a trip to Cochem, a charming town in the Moselle region.
