Oman with children

The 3 most beautiful hikes with small children

Oman with children? Definitely do it! It is a  country that has not yet seen large amounts of tourists and where the population is very child-friendly. The Middle East can deter some people, but there are so many countries here where traveling is a joy. Especially with small children, you’ll be amazed by the hospitality and kindness of the people. We have rarely seen as many great playgrounds at a travel destination as in Oman. A very versatile country, if you ask us!

The most beautiful hikes in Oman with children - Wadi Shab

There are many wadis in Oman. These are gorges in the dry land, filled with stunning blue water. In these waters, surrounded by palm trees, you can enjoy swimming. An ideal spot for children!

At Wadi Shab, you take a boat from the parking lot into the area. For the children, this is already a fun start to the hike. After a very short boat ride (about 2 minutes), you immediately begin a lovely route along the high rock walls.

You walk (with small children) for 1.5 hours toward the first location where you can swim. The first part of the route is flat, but at some point, you will need to climb and scramble a bit. The water gradually transitions from shallow to deep, allowing small children to play and swim safely.

The most beautiful hikes in Oman with children - Wadi Bani Khalid

Near the Wahiba Sands desert lies Wadi Bani Khalid. In this nature area, you have many opportunities for swimming, but the route to the cave is quite adventurous. From the bridge at the beginning of the gorge, you can jump into the water. Jumping from the rocks is prohibited.

This area is quite popular among tourists, but the further you walk, the fewer tourists you encounter along the way. You can hike quite a distance in this area, and it’s definitely worth it. Afterwards, you can cool off with a drink at the nearby café.

It is not appreciated here for a woman to dive into the water in a bikini. We also took this into account for the children.

The most beautiful hikes in Oman with children - Jebel Shams

The Grand Canyon of the Middle East. As you enter the area, you can already see the rugged rock formations. It looks very exciting, and you might initially wonder if you can hike here with young children. Fortunately, the hike itself is quite manageable and is also suitable for children.

There is plenty of space to walk, and the steep walls are manageable. Reaching the endpoint can be challenging with small children, as it’s too far and involves a lot of climbing and scrambling. Fortunately, you can enjoy the view from the starting point, and you can decide how far you’d like to hike.

Wow, you don’t see a view like this very often!

About Globedochters

Hi Globedrivers here,

An adventurous family that enjoys other cultures and environments. We are Thijs and Imara and together with our ‘GlobeDaughters’ Nora Lynn and Juliëtte, we want to inspire others to keep discovering the world even after having children. We are a family that, because of the children, stand beside the bed at the first morning sun and then immediately set off with energy for ten, because we want to go on an adventure!

Our trip during the Christmas holiday took us to Oman. The Middle East greatly attracts us, and we love the unique culture and surroundings. We have also traveled through Jordan and Israel. We hope to someday add Saudi Arabia and Iran to our list. We also love Asia and hope to take a round trip through Japan one day, but we still need to save up for that.

We are currently looking at opportunities to live abroad as a family for an extended period of time. Spending time as a family is very precious to us and this experience seems unforgettable, also for our daughters.
