These 6 things are a must-do in Copenhagen with children!

Copenhagen is a fantastic city to visit with children. It’s only an hour’s flight from Amsterdam (read our tips for flying with children here), it’s calm and compact, and there are plenty of great restaurants and beautiful shops. An ideal city for a city trip with kids!

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and has 650,000 inhabitants. The climate in Denmark is similar to that of the Netherlands, but it rains less. It’s a city you can easily explore over a long weekend. In this blog, we’ll share six activities that will make Copenhagen unforgettable with children — not just for the kids, but for you too!

Amusement Park Tivoli - Copenhagen with Kids

Tivoli is an amusement park located in the center of Copenhagen. It is a combination of a park, garden, amusement park, playground, and fair all in one. You can easily spend a whole day here. There are different types of entrance tickets available. You can purchase just an entrance pass (which we did), giving you access to the park, gardens, and restaurants, but you need to pay separately for the attractions. There’s also a separate Unlimited Ride ticket that grants access to all the attractions in the park.

When you exit the park through the Food Hall, you get a stamp that allows you to re-enter later. After lunch, we walked back to the hotel, where the kids took a nap. In the afternoon and evening, we spent more time in Tivoli. To end the day, you can grab a bite at one of the many food courts in the Tivoli Food Hall. It’s easy, quick, and delicious—perfect with kids!

Note: Tivoli is only open in the summer, during Halloween, and over the Christmas period. Be sure to check the park’s opening hours here before you go.

Cycling through Copenhagen with a cargo bike

Exploring Copenhagen on foot might be a bit too much with children. Especially if you want to see the Little Mermaid, you’ll have to walk quite a distance. The bike is a better alternative. Copenhagen has been named the best cycling city in the world several times and boasts 350 kilometers of bike lanes. The bike paths are slightly elevated above the regular road and are very safe.

And want a true Copenhagen experience? Then opt for the cargo bike! You see them everywhere in the city. We rented our cargo bike at Baisikeli. We paid around 40 euros for the cargo bike and 13 euros for a regular bike for 4 hours. It’s a super fun way to explore Copenhagen with children.

Climbing the round tower of Copenhagen with children

From the Round Tower, you have a beautiful view over Copenhagen. This tower is nearly 35 meters high and houses the oldest functioning observatory in Europe. A great bonus: there are no stairs; you ascend via a steep spiral ramp. So, it’s also accessible with a stroller! Check the current opening hours and admission prices. here.

Watching horses at Christiansborg - Copenhagen with children

What you definitely shouldn’t miss during your visit to Copenhagen with children are the stables of Christiansborg Palace. In any case, the former Royal Palace, Christiansborg Palace, is a beautiful building to visit. The palace now houses the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court of Denmark, and the office of the Prime Minister of Denmark.

In the Royal Stables, you’ll find the beautiful horses used during festive occasions. In the past, 270 royal horses were kept here, but now there are only 20. Besides the horses, you can also admire the state carriages and other vehicles. Here you’ll find all the practical information for your visit. We were lucky—the horses were training in the arena in front of the palace. So, we didn’t visit the stables but got to watch the training for free.

Visiting playgrounds – Copenhagen with children

Did you know that you can search for playgrounds on Google Maps, and it will show you an overview of all the playgrounds nearby? It’s a fun thing to do in an unfamiliar city! In Copenhagen, we ended up at Skyedebanehaven. It’s a lovely playground for all ages, tucked away in a courtyard of a beautiful old building. It’s free to visit and a great way to connect with the locals.

Eating pastries and having breakfast – Copenhagen with children

We love having breakfast out and enjoying pastries. Luckily, Copenhagen has many cute and trendy spots. One of our favorites for breakfast is Bowl Market Copenhagen. We ordered a smoothie bowl, a big bowl of oatmeal, and a croissant. Also, you shouldn’t miss Conditori La Glace for the tastiest pastries and macarons. We chose to take them away since the place might be a bit too fancy to visit with young children. The pastries were delicious and a feast for the eyes.
