The most beautiful tulip fields

These are the most beautiful tulip fields in the Netherlands!

The tulip fields in the Netherlands attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. However, many Dutch people have never visited a tulip field. What a shame! The fields filled with tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils in every color of the rainbow are not only beautiful but also free to visit.

In the Netherlands, you’ll find many bulb fields, with the most famous ones located in the Bollenstreek. This area stretches between Leiden and the coast, from Wassenaar to Hillegom. The renowned botanical garden Keukenhof in Lisse is also situated in this region. While it’s stunning, it can get very crowded, especially on weekends, so we recommend avoiding these bulb fields during that time. In this blog, you’ll learn everything you need to know about visiting the most beautiful (and tranquil) tulip fields in the Netherlands.

Where can you find the most beautiful tulip fields in the Netherlands?

A great alternative to the crowds in the Bollenstreek are the quiet and still undiscovered tulip fields in Goeree-Overflakkee. These beautiful tulip fields are just a half-hour drive from Rotterdam. So beautiful, vast, and without tourists. What a difference from the tulip fields in the Bollenstreek! You can have the fields all to yourself if you visit on a Saturday morning.

For a nice driving route, take a round trip between the villages of Oude-Tonge, Dirksland, and Middelharnis. The most beautiful fields, which are freely accessible, can be found at:
Korteweg in Nieuwe-Tonge. Beautiful red tulips.
the Armenweg in Nieuwe-Tonge. Endless pink and purple tulips.

Would you rather cycle? Then choose the tulip route. This route, approximately 29 kilometers long, is set up annually and takes you along dikes and fields full of beautiful tulips. You can find more information on the Goeree-Overflakkee website.

The best time to visit the tulip fields

Tulip fields generally bloom between late March and early May. The blooming period depends on the weather conditions in early spring; the colder the spring, the later the fields will bloom. The daffodil fields bloom first, from late March to early April, followed by the hyacinth fields from early to late April. Finally, the tulip fields bloom from around mid-April to early May. Note: Only tulips grow in Goeree-Overflakkee, so there are no daffodils or hyacinths.

Useful information and tips

Did you know that walking through the tulip fields is not appreciated? Every year, many flowers are trampled by tourists. But even if you pay close attention and don’t step on the flowers, you can still damage them. You can bring diseases and pests into the fields, such as fungi and bacteria. Therefore, in 2022, the growers started a campaign with the slogan: “Enjoy the flowers, respect our pride.” So enjoy the flowers, but only enter the fields when it is clearly indicated that you may do so.

No matter how nice the photos are, do NOT do this unless it is specifically indicated that you may enter the fields.

By the way, we hopefully don’t need to mention that picking flowers is also not allowed! 😉

Wrap up your morning at the tulip fields with a visit to family restaurant Brasserie Dok16, along with the nearby Hernesseroord Playground and Middelharnis Children’s Farm.

Also fun…

If you really want to visit the Bollenstreek, try not to go on the weekend—or preferably go as early as possible. We drove this ANWB driving route: the Bollenstreek Route. It’s really fun and convenient, especially if you have a baby. Along the route, you can park and get out to visit the tulip fields. Parking spots can be scarce during busy times.

Enjoy the tulip fields, but please don’t walk through them (we didn’t know this either 🙁 ).
