Australia with children is a dream destination. This country on the other side of the world has so much to offer; there is something for everyone. Coral reefs, beautiful beaches, modern big cities, the dusty hot outback, waterfalls, and a wide variety of animals.
We took a fantastic road trip of 9,000 kilometers through this beautiful country. In this blog, we list our highlights to convince you that a vacation to Australia with children will be an unforgettable journey.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) is a gigantic red rock in the middle of Australia. It is the most famous tourist attraction in Australia, yet it receives only about 250,000 visitors per year. In comparison, Sydney has approximately 9 million visitors annually, and over 2 million tourists visit the Great Barrier Reef each year.
Uluru is located in the middle of the outback, far from the major coastal cities. For example, Sydney is a 3.5-hour flight away. This is one reason why this place is relatively less visited, but itβs also one of the reasons that Uluru is such a magical spot. You find yourself in the heart of the outback of the beautiful red continent.
For the local people of Australia, the Aboriginals, Uluru is a sacred place. Climbing the rock has been prohibited since 2019. However, you can enjoy a beautiful 10-kilometer walk (buggy-friendly!) or bike ride around the mountain. Be sure not to miss the sunrise and sunset. The park has a designated sunset and sunrise viewing area where you can park your car or camper. The rock magically changes colors to red, yellow, purple, blue, and brown.
Visit the Fields of Light by artist Bruce Munro in the evening after sunset. More than 50,000 lights illuminate the area in colors such as purple, red, white, and yellow. The lights are spread over an area of about 7 football fields, and you can take a walk for either 20 minutes (the short route) or 40 minutes (the long route). Uluru is located in UluαΉu-Kata TjuαΉ―a National Park. The only nearby village is Yulara, which is also home to the Ayers Rock Resort. Here, you’ll find the only hotels, shops, restaurants, and camping options in the area. The nearest town is Alice Springs, located 450 kilometers away.

A dream come true: flying over the Great Barrier Reef!
There are various ways to explore the Great Barrier Reef. You can book different boat trips to various islands, enjoy beach activities, dive, and snorkel. However, the most spectacular way to see the Great Barrier Reef with children is definitely from the air. In the sky, you truly realize how vast this beautiful reef is (approximately the size of Italy).
Several companies offer flights. We flew from Airlie Beach with Ocean Rafting, booked through Get Your Guide, for 60 minutes over the Great Barrier Reef. We flew over Heart Reef, Whitehaven Beach, and Hill Inlet, among other sights. Children up to two years old can usually fly on a parent’s lap.
Sydney is one of those places that feels surreal when youβre there. It seems like you already know the city, with its iconic Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. How many times have you seen photos of them? For us, Sydney was a wonderful city to relax after our road trip across this beautiful continent.
