The St. Rumbold’s Tower
The St. Rumbold’s Tower, with its impressive height of 97 meters, towers high above Mechelen and is a must-see for families with children. Lizzy considered this the highlight of her weekend in Mechelen, and it’s easy to see why! An adventurous climb of over 500 steps takes you up to the skywalk, where you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the cathedral of Antwerp and the Atomium in Brussels. The climb may seem like a challenge for the little ones, but along the way, you’ll encounter six tower rooms where you can rest and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of bells and bell towers.

A stroll along the Haverwerf takes you back in time to the 16th and 17th centuries. Here, you’ll find three beautiful buildings, each with its own unique style and character.

Explore the waterways of Mechelen by boat, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP)
Do you need some relaxation after a day full of adventure in the city? Step aboard an electric boat and explore Mechelen from the water. The historic city center is perfect for a scenic boat trip. Depart from the heart of the city, at the footbridge between the Vismarkt and Haverwerf. Sail under the Kraanbrug, past the charming marina, beneath the old city walls at the Winketpoort, and reach the picturesque Keerdok. Here, you can admire the impressive Old Swimming Pool from 1915 and see the lock that leads to the Scheldt, which flows directly to the North Sea. On your return to the center, you’ll pass beautiful apartments and lofts along the banks of the Dijle. You’ll also see remnants of the former Lamot brewery and sail under the Hoogbrug, the oldest stone bridge in Flanders (built in 1230).

How to get to Mechelen?
Mechelen is easily accessible by various transportation options:
By car: If you’re traveling by car, you can easily reach Mechelen via the E19 and E40 motorways. The city is located about 25 kilometers from Brussels and approximately 30 kilometers from Antwerp. Note that some parts of the city center are car-free.
By train: Mechelen has a central train station that is well connected to cities like Brussels, Antwerp, and Leuven. The train station is within walking distance of the city center.
Where to park in Mechelen?
Parking in Mechelen is well organized, but it’s important to pay attention to the rules and rates. Here are some options for parking in Mechelen:
Free parking: Outside the city center, there are some areas where you can park for free. The parking lot at Douaneplein is closest to the center (about a 10-minute walk away).
Paid parking: In the city center of Mechelen, paid parking applies. You can pay at parking meters or use a mobile parking app. Rates vary depending on the zone and duration of parking. Make sure to respect the parking time to avoid fines.
Parking garages: Mechelen has several public parking garages located throughout the city. Some popular garages include Parking Kathedraal, Parking Veemarkt, and Parking Lamot. These garages offer both short-term and long-term parking options.
Park and Ride (P+R): If you’re coming from outside the city, consider using one of the P+R locations on the ring road (R12) of Mechelen. You can park your car there and take public transport to the city center.

How many days do you need?
A stay of at least 2 days in Mechelen is an excellent starting point to discover the city’s highlights and experience a relaxing atmosphere. If you plan to visit the zoo, Technopolis, and other attractions, we recommend staying for at least 2 nights in Mechelen. This allows you to experience the city at a more leisurely pace and enjoy all the attractions without rushing.
The best time to travel
Mechelen has a lot to offer visitors year-round. Here’s an overview of the best times to visit Mechelen, depending on your interests and preferences.
Spring (March – May): Spring is a beautiful time to visit Mechelen. The city comes alive with blooming flowers and trees, making it perfect for scenic walks through the parks and along the canals. Another reason to visit Mechelen in spring is the Easter festivities.
Summer (June – August): Summer is a popular time to visit Mechelen, especially because of the pleasant weather and the numerous events and festivals.
