Phong Nha with Kids: Complete Guide + Tips & Hotels
Phong Nha with kids was one of the biggest surprises of our trip through Vietnam. We’re Niek and Janine, and in the summer of 2022 we spent four weeks traveling around Vietnam with our sons, Sem (10) and Just (6). It was already our second trip to this beautiful country. During our first journey in 2018, we hadn’t visited Phong Nha, so this time this unique destination was high on our list.
We added Phong Nha to our itinerary not only to break up the long journey between Quy Nhon and Hanoi, but especially because of the spectacular caves the region is famous for worldwide. We also loved escaping the hustle and bustle of the big cities for a while. Here, you’ll find vast rice fields, dramatic limestone mountains, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels completely different from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
In our opinion, Phong Nha is an ideal destination for families who love nature, adventure, and tranquility. Keep in mind that many of the caves can only be reached via stairs and walking trails, which can sometimes be slippery. A stroller is therefore not practical. We especially recommend Phong Nha for families with children who can walk independently and enjoy exploring.

Things to Do in Phong Nha with Kids
One of the first things you’ll notice is how much there is to do for families, without it feeling overly designed for children. It’s the small, everyday experiences that make it so enjoyable.
Explore Phong Nha by Scooter
One thing we highly recommend when visiting Phong Nha with kids is renting a scooter for a day and exploring the area at your own pace. The roads are surprisingly quiet, well maintained, and wind through a beautiful landscape of rice fields, limestone mountains, and small villages. Because there is so little traffic, we found this to be one of the best places in Vietnam to ride a scooter ourselves.
Along the way, you’ll pass water buffalo grazing in the fields, small local shops, and stunning viewpoints. Be sure to stop every now and then, as the scenery is just as impressive as the attractions themselves.
Visit the Spectacular Paradise Cave
The absolute highlight of our visit was without a doubt Paradise Cave (Thiên Đường Cave). This incredible cave is located in Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its vast network of spectacular caves.
From the parking area, you first take a short ride on an electric shuttle to get closer to the entrance. From there, it’s an uphill walk, followed by a long staircase descending into the cave. It may sound like a bit of a challenge, but trust us—it’s absolutely worth it.
Once inside, you’ll be amazed by the sheer size of the cave. Towering stalactites and stalagmites, formed over thousands of years, create an unforgettable landscape. Wide wooden walkways make it easy and safe to explore at your own pace. Our boys loved it and couldn’t stop marveling at the enormous chambers and unique rock formations. Paradise Cave is a great attraction for families with children who can walk independently, but it’s not suitable for strollers due to the many stairs.

Cycle Through the Peaceful Village of Phong Nha
The next day, we decided to slow things down and borrowed bicycles from our accommodation. It turned out to be the perfect way to explore the village of Phong Nha and its beautiful surroundings.
Phong Nha is small, peaceful, and feels completely different from Vietnam’s busy cities. As you cycle around, you’ll pass simple homes, lush rice fields, and friendly locals who greet you with a smile. Along the way, we stumbled upon a local market where residents were doing their daily shopping. That was exactly what made it so special—it wasn’t a tourist market, but a glimpse into everyday Vietnamese life. Of course, we couldn’t resist wandering through the stalls for a while.

Enjoy the Peace and Natural Beauty
What made Phong Nha so special to us was the sense of peace and quiet. While many of Vietnam’s most popular destinations can be quite crowded, the atmosphere here is calm and relaxed. Instead of busy streets and long lines of tourists, you’ll find nature, open landscapes, and tranquility.
That’s exactly why we thought Phong Nha was such a wonderful stop during our family trip through Vietnam. After visiting the country’s lively cities, it was the perfect place to slow down, relax, and enjoy the stunning natural surroundings for a few days.
More Fun Things to Do in Phong Nha with Kids
If you have a little more time in Phong Nha, there are plenty of additional activities to add to your itinerary. Below are some of the most popular family-friendly experiences.
Take a Boat Trip Through Phong Nha Cave
Besides Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave is one of the region’s most famous attractions. The biggest difference? You explore most of this cave by boat. From the dock, you’ll cruise along the Son River straight into the cave while taking in the impressive limestone cliffs along the way. Inside, the temperature drops pleasantly, and you’ll glide past enormous stalactites and stalagmites. For families with younger children, this is often a more relaxing alternative to Paradise Cave since there’s much less walking involved.
Experience an Adventure at Dark Cave
For families with older children, Dark Cave (Hang Tối) is an exciting adventure. You reach the cave by crossing the river on a spectacular zipline before exploring its dark passages with a headlamp. One of the highlights is the natural mud bath hidden deep inside the cave. After your cave adventure, you can go swimming, kayaking, or enjoy the small water park. Keep in mind that this activity is less suitable for younger children, as there is usually a minimum age or height requirement.
Cool Off at Mooc Spring Eco Trail
On a hot day, Mooc Spring Eco Trail is the perfect place to spend a few relaxing hours. Wooden boardwalks lead you through a tropical forest to crystal-clear spring water, where you can swim or kayak. Children will enjoy the various play and climbing structures above the water, and there are several simple restaurants where you can stop for lunch. It’s an ideal change of pace if you’re ready for a break from cave exploring.
Visit the Phong Nha Botanic Garden
Located near the entrance to the national park, the Phong Nha Botanic Garden offers an easy walk through tropical vegetation, past small waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. If you’re lucky, you might spot butterflies, birds, or other wildlife along the way. The trails are relatively short, making this a great activity for families who want to enjoy nature without committing to a long hike.
The Duck Stop
The Duck Stop is often recommended as a fun stop for families. Children can feed ducks and get a glimpse of life on a traditional Vietnamese farm. That said, the attraction has become very popular with tourists in recent years, and we personally have some reservations about its current animal welfare standards. We didn’t visit it ourselves and would rather spend our time enjoying the beautiful nature, impressive caves, and scenic cycling routes that make Phong Nha so special.
Explore Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park
Phong Nha is located in the heart of Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003. While the park is best known for its vast network of caves, it also features untouched jungle, dramatic limestone mountains, and a remarkable variety of wildlife. There are numerous hiking trails and guided excursions available, ranging from a few hours to multi-day treks. For families with young children, the shorter walks and cave visits are usually the best option.

Where to Stay in Phong Nha with Kids
Sy’s Homestay
During our stay in Phong Nha with kids, we stayed at Sy’s Homestay, a small, family-run accommodation just outside the center of Phong Nha. Its peaceful location was one of the things we loved most. Surrounded by rice fields with the region’s iconic limestone mountains in the background, it offers a truly relaxing setting. The swimming pool overlooks the lush green landscape, making it the perfect place to cool off after a day of exploring while the kids enjoy another swim.

The homestay also rents out bicycles and scooters, making it easy to explore the surrounding area at your own pace. Thanks to the quiet roads, it’s an ideal base for visiting the caves, cycling through the rice fields, and discovering the nearby villages. If you’re looking for a cozy, affordable place to stay rather than a luxury resort, we think Sy’s Homestay is an excellent choice for families visiting Phong Nha with children.
Phong Nha Farmstay
Another popular family-friendly accommodation is Phong Nha Farmstay. This charming property is located just outside the village, surrounded by the lush landscapes of Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park. It features a large swimming pool, spacious family rooms, and an excellent restaurant serving both Vietnamese and Western dishes. There’s plenty of space for children to play, and the peaceful setting makes it a wonderful place to unwind after a day of adventure. You can also rent bicycles or scooters here to explore the surrounding area.
Phong Nha Lake House Resort
If you’re looking for a little more comfort, Phong Nha Lake House Resort is an excellent choice. Set beside a large lake, the resort features a swimming pool with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The spacious family rooms, friendly staff, and tranquil atmosphere make it a great base for families. Guests can borrow bicycles free of charge to explore the area, and the resort also organizes a variety of tours to the caves and the national park.
Where to Eat in Phong Nha with Kids
Although Phong Nha is a small village, you’ll find a surprising number of cozy restaurants. Most are located along the river, allowing you to enjoy beautiful views of the water and the surrounding mountains while you eat. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, perfectly reflecting the laid-back vibe of the village.
Barbecue at Sy’s Homestay
During our stay, we joined the barbecue evening organized by Sy’s Homestay, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable nights of our trip. While the kids were still having fun in the swimming pool, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue together with other guests and experienced the incredible hospitality of the owners. It was that small-scale, personal atmosphere that made the evening so memorable.
Lunch in the Village
We had lunch twice at small local restaurants in the center of Phong Nha. Unfortunately, we don’t remember their names, but that didn’t really matter. The village is full of small, family-run restaurants where you can enjoy excellent food for very reasonable prices. In our opinion, Vietnam has an incredibly high standard of food, and Phong Nha certainly lived up to that reputation.

Phong Nha Coffee Station – Vietnamese Food & Pizza
One restaurant that comes highly recommended by many travelers is Phong Nha Coffee Station – Vietnamese Food & Pizza. The menu includes authentic Vietnamese dishes alongside pizzas, pasta, and other Western favorites. It’s an excellent option if your children are ready for something familiar after a few days of rice and noodles.
As far as we’re concerned, Vietnam may have the best cuisine in all of Asia—fresh, diverse, and surprisingly affordable. Even the pickiest eaters will usually find something they enjoy.
How to Get to Phong Nha with Kids
Phong Nha is located in central Vietnam and is easily accessible from several major destinations. The nearest city is Dong Hoi, about 45 kilometers away. We traveled to Dong Hoi by train and then arranged a taxi to Sy’s Homestay through our accommodation. It worked perfectly—the driver was waiting for us at the station and took us to the homestay in about 45 minutes. Many hotels and homestays in Phong Nha offer this transfer service, so it’s definitely worth asking about when you book.
If you’re traveling from Ninh Binh, Hue, or Da Nang, you can also choose a direct train or a comfortable private transfer. There are also daily sleeper buses to Phong Nha, although we personally wouldn’t recommend them for families with young children. A good night’s sleep is invaluable during a family trip, so we generally prefer traveling during the day or taking the train whenever possible.
Practical Tips for Visiting Phong Nha with Kids
How long to stay?
We stayed in Phong Nha for two nights, which gave us about a day and a half to explore the area. That was enough time to visit the main attractions, including Paradise Cave, enjoy a scenic ride through the countryside, and discover the village itself. Looking back, we would have happily stayed an extra night. The surroundings are incredibly beautiful, and the relaxed atmosphere makes Phong Nha the perfect place to slow down during a family trip through Vietnam. After the hustle and bustle of the larger cities, we really appreciated the peace, the lush green rice fields, and the stunning natural scenery.
Our recommendation is to stay for at least two nights. If your itinerary allows, choose three nights instead. That gives you enough time to visit several caves, spend a day exploring the area by scooter or bicycle, and still have plenty of time to relax by your accommodation’s swimming pool. It’s exactly this combination of adventure and relaxation that makes Phong Nha one of our favorite family destinations in Vietnam.
Best Time to Visit Phong Nha with Kids
The best time to visit Phong Nha with kids is from February to August. During these months, the weather is generally dry and sunny, making it ideal for exploring the spectacular caves and the beautiful landscapes of Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park.
We visited Phong Nha in July and enjoyed fantastic weather throughout our stay. It was hot during the day, but that actually made visiting the caves even more enjoyable. Inside, the temperature is surprisingly cool, making them the perfect escape during the hottest part of the day. Since we had rented a scooter, exploring the surrounding countryside was also very comfortable.
From September to November, the region experiences its heaviest rainfall. During this period, some caves and roads may become temporarily inaccessible due to high water levels. If you’re traveling during these months, be prepared for more unpredictable weather.
Getting Around Phong Nha with Kids
During our stay, we rented a scooter through our homestay, and we would highly recommend doing the same. The roads in and around Phong Nha are quiet, well maintained, and wind through beautiful scenery filled with rice fields, limestone mountains, and small villages. With so little traffic, we found it to be one of the easiest and most enjoyable places in Vietnam to ride a scooter. It gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace and stop whenever something caught our eye.
We also made good use of the complimentary bicycles available at our accommodation. Although our homestay was located just outside the village center, cycling into town was quick and easy. As Dutch travelers, that naturally felt very familiar to us. Along the way, you’ll pass local homes, lush rice fields, and friendly residents, making the bike ride itself a fun part of the experience.
If you don’t have experience riding scooters or you’re traveling with very young children, you can also easily arrange a taxi or Grab in Phong Nha, although availability is more limited compared to Vietnam’s larger cities.

Useful Tips for Visiting Phong Nha with Kids
Are you arriving by train at Dong Hoi Station? Then it’s a good idea to arrange a transfer to your accommodation in advance. Many homestays and hotels offer this service, allowing you to travel directly to Phong Nha after your train journey without having to search for transportation on arrival.
It’s also worth bringing sturdy shoes. Many caves require climbing a significant number of stairs, and the paths can sometimes be slippery. A stroller is therefore not very practical; for younger children, a baby carrier is a much better option.
And perhaps our most important tip: take your time. Phong Nha is not a destination where you need to rush from one attraction to the next. The peaceful atmosphere, impressive nature, and relaxed pace are exactly what make this place so special. Explore the area by scooter or bicycle, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and let yourself be surprised by a completely different side of Vietnam.
Phong Nha During Our Family Trip Through Vietnam
We visited Phong Nha with kids as part of a four-week trip through Vietnam. Our route started in Ho Chi Minh City, after which we slowly traveled north via Mũi Né, Quy Nhon, and Da Nang. From Da Nang, we took the train to Dong Hoi and continued our journey to Phong Nha.
For us, Phong Nha was the perfect place to slow down and recharge. After visiting the coastal destinations, we loved spending time here surrounded by incredible nature, world-famous caves, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. It was also a great stopover before continuing our journey toward the mountainous regions of northern Vietnam.
After our stay, we continued our route to Mu Cang Chai, famous for its spectacular rice terraces. From there, we traveled on to Hanoi, where we started the famous Ha Giang Loop adventure. We eventually ended our journey back in Hanoi before flying home.
