Touring Colombia with children

Itinerary & highlights

This summer, we took a fantastic five-week trip through Colombia with our children, and our choice of this destination initially raised many surprised reactions. For many, Colombia is still associated with violence and insecurity. However, in our opinion, this prejudice is completely unfounded. During our trip, we experienced Colombia as an extraordinarily welcoming and safe country, perfectly suited for an adventurous holiday with children.

In this blog, we take you along on our journey and share our itinerary and highlights. Also, check out the blog by Manon, who took a slightly different route through beautiful Colombia with her 1-year-old daughter.

Touring Colombia with children – Itinerary

Our tour of Colombia with children looked like this:

Cartagena

Our journey began in Cartagena, a city steeped in history and color. The streets of Cartagena greeted us with their vibrant façades and local delicacies, the perfect introduction to our Colombian adventure.

Rosario-islands

From Cartagena, we set course for the Rosario Islands, a true paradise in the Caribbean Sea. Our days were filled with canoe trips over the crystal-clear water, enjoying the stunning blue sea, and relaxing in our cozy hut on the beach.

Santa Marta & Tayrona National Park

Santa Marta was our next stop, a city full of charm on the Caribbean coast. Here, we enjoyed the local culture and prepared ourselves for our adventure in Tayrona National Park. The park is known for its lush jungles and enchanting beaches. Our hikes through the jungle led us to secluded pieces of paradise, where we could peacefully enjoy the beauty of nature.

Palomino

Palomino was a true beach gem, where we spent our time walking along the coastline, accompanied by cheerful stray dogs we befriended.

Minca

Minca added a touch of adventure with a visit to a picturesque waterfall and our stay in a peaceful hotel by the river. The kids had a great time swimming at the waterfall; it’s truly a must-visit!

Medellín

After a short flight, we arrived in Medellín, a city full of life and culture. The Comuna 13 tour with our guide showcased the city’s transformation and the strength of community.

Guatapé

We concluded our trip in Guatapé. The view from the summit of El Peñón was absolutely breathtaking.

Our unforgettable journey ended where it began, in the magical Cartagena. With memories of colorful streets and friendly people, we flew back home, knowing that Colombia had stolen our hearts and that our family was richer for the experiences we had.

Touring Colombia with children - highlights

Our highlight was undoubtedly the ascent of El Peñón in Guatapé, which flaunts a height of 2137 meters 😉. From the summit, we were treated to breathtaking views of Guatapé and the surrounding area.

However, it’s difficult for us to choose just one highlight from our round trip through Colombia with children, as we had so many beautiful and unique experiences! From the relaxed atmosphere in Palomino to walking and swimming with the dogs from the local shelter, from the lush jungle in Tayrona Park to the vibrant metropolis of Medellín, where we took a fascinating tour of the famous Comuna 13 neighborhood. And let’s not forget the Colombian culture, which is deeply rooted in daily life and proudly expressed by the people through dance and music on the streets. Colombia is simply too rich in diversity and beauty to be captured in just one highlight.

It wouldn’t be fair to try to choose the absolute best or most fun moment, as Colombia has surprised and enchanted us in so many ways. All in all, we can only say that Colombia has positively surprised us, and we can wholeheartedly say that this country is an absolute must-visit for families with children!

About Prynta

We are a family of four: Rik & Prynta, and our boys Nijs & Geus, aged 9 and 6 years old.

We have traveled a lot together, and we found our 2.5-month trip to New Zealand very exciting. Nijs was 3 years old and has his first memories from this trip. Geus was a baby just a few months old. The trips just with Nijs to Morocco and Sri Lanka are also special memories.

In addition to our annual vacations and trips, we take a longer trip approximately every 6 years. This allows us to travel for a longer period, visit more countries, and travel more affordably outside of school holidays! Our last longer trip was 6 years ago, and this year we started feeling the urge to travel again. We happened to realize that it has been 6 years since we last traveled for an extended period, so it seems to be a recurring theme.

For next year, we have a whole lot of beautiful trips planned, which we will share later. We are currently in the process of planning a trip to Nepal, among other destinations, as this country seems to be a good fit for Nijs and Geus’s ages.
