Ninh Binh with Kids
The best things to do and travel tips
Ninh Binh was one of our favourite places during ourfamily trip through Vietnam. When you think of Vietnam, you might immediately think of Hanoi, the rice terraces of Sapaor the beaches of Phu Quoc, but Ninh Binh is definitely a destination you shouldn’t miss. This is the Vietnam you see on postcards: lush green rice fields, impressive limestone mountains, winding rivers and small villages.
What made Ninh Binh so special for us was the combination of beautiful nature, fun activities and a peaceful atmosphere. You can take a boat trip between the mountains, cycle past rice fields and visit temples. But it’s also a wonderful place to slow down and take it easy for a few days. The children, for example, enjoyed not only the excursions but also spending time in the swimming pool at our accommodation.
We stayed in Ninh Binh for three nights. This was enough time to explore the main attractions, but looking back, we would happily have stayed a little longer. In this blog, I’ll share our experiences and tips for visiting Ninh Binh with kids.

How to Get to Ninh Binh?
Ninh Binh is about a two-hour drive from Hanoi, making it a natural stop on a tour of Northern Vietnam. We arranged a private transfer through TravelThru in advance. We found this very convenient, especially when travelling with children, as we didn’t have to worry about departure times or changing transport along the way. You can also arrange transport through your accommodation, of course. Once in Ninh Binh, we found there were plenty of ways to get around.
Things to Do in Ninh Binh with Kids
There is surprisingly a lot to see and do in the Ninh Binh area, so you certainly won’t get bored. These are the sights and activities we think you shouldn’t miss.
Take a Boat Trip Through Trang An
A boat trip through Trang An is definitely one of the highlights of Ninh Binh. You hop into a traditional rowing boat and cruise through an impressive landscape of towering limestone mountains, lush green banks and caves. Along the way, you’ll sometimes pass through low, dark caves and sail past temples and small landing spots.
It’s quite touristy, but we certainly didn’t feel that this took away from the experience. There are plenty of visitors, especially Vietnamese and other Asian tourists. That’s exactly why it’s a good idea to go as early in the day as possible. The temperatures are usually more pleasant then, too.
At Trang An, you can choose from three different boat routes. They vary in terms of the caves, temples and places you’ll visit along the way. Depending on the route, the trip takes around two to four hours. Route 1 is generally the longest, while routes 2 and 3 are a little shorter. Which route you choose mainly depends on how much time you have and what you’d like to see along the way.
The boat trip is also manageable with children, although you should bear in mind that you’ll be sitting in the boat for several hours. There are several stops at small islands along the way, where you can use the toilets or buy something to eat and drink. On some sections, you’ll pass through low caves, so watch your head! Make sure to bring plenty of water, sun protection and perhaps a hat, as you’ll spend much of the trip in the sun.

Climb to the Hang Mua Viewpoint
If you want to enjoy a beautiful view over Ninh Binh, Hang Mua is a must. You’ll climb a long stone staircase to a viewpoint at the top of the mountain. The climb consists of around 500 steps and can be quite challenging, especially on a hot day.
We thought the view was more than worth the effort. From the top, you can look out over the spectacular landscape of limestone mountains, green fields and the river winding its way through the area. This is exactly the kind of scenery you’ve probably seen in photos of Vietnam. You can also enjoy views over Tam Coc. That was one of the reasons we chose to take the boat trip in Trang An: this way, we got to experience both Trang An and the landscape around Tam Coc.
With children, the climb is manageable depending on their age and fitness level, but don’t underestimate the heat. We found it quite hot, and the children weren’t particularly enthusiastic about climbing all those steps. It’s best to go early in the morning or later in the day, bring plenty of water and take your time. Keep a close eye on the children at the top, too, as some sections are steep and the paths can be quite narrow

Cycle Through the Rice Fields and Villages
Perhaps this was actually our favourite thing to do in Ninh Binh: simply going for a bike ride. The area is relatively flat, and many accommodations offer bicycles free of charge or for a small fee. Often, children’s bikes and child seats are available too.
We loved heading out without a fixed plan. You cycle past lush green rice fields, see water buffaloes cooling off in the water and pass through small villages where everyday life carries on as usual. Sometimes we deliberately took a little side road to explore even further among the rice fields. That’s exactly what made it so enjoyable.
Along the way, you can stop somewhere for a drink or lunch and simply enjoy the scenery. There’s no need to plan a complicated route. Ask your accommodation which roads are worth exploring and just set off. Cycling is also a lovely way to discover the area with children.

Visit Bich Dong Pagoda
Bich Dong Pagoda is a beautiful temple built against a green mountainside. You walk across a stone bridge and climb a series of steps past different temple areas and caves. The surroundings are stunning, and it’s a lovely place to combine with a visit to Tam Coc. It’s not a huge attraction that requires hours of exploring, but rather a pleasant short stop during a day out in the area. Bear in mind that there are a few steps to climb here as well.
Visit Bai Dinh Pagoda
Another well-known attraction in the area is Bai Dinh Pagoda. This is a huge Buddhist temple complex with several temple buildings, statues and long corridors. The complex is impressive because of its sheer size and architecture. You can easily spend a few hours exploring here.
As the grounds are quite extensive, you can use electric shuttle carts to cover some of the distances. Bai Dinh is particularly interesting if you’d like to learn more about Vietnamese culture and religion. If you’re visiting with young children, it’s worth keeping the distances and amount of walking in mind.

Visit Hoa Lu Old Town in the Evening
One place I’d definitely recommend is Hoa Lu Old Town. It’s particularly charming in the evening, when the area comes alive with atmospheric lighting, colourful lanterns, little bridges and market stalls. It reminds me a little of Hoi An, but on a smaller scale. If you’re not visiting Hoi An during your trip, this is definitely a lovely place to include in your itinerary. Even if you are visiting Hoi An, it’s still a nice spot to spend an evening. You can wander around, grab something to eat or drink and soak up the atmosphere.

Explore Cuc Phuong National Park
If you’d like to discover more of the natural surroundings during your stay in Ninh Binh, Cuc Phuong National Park is a great addition to your itinerary. It is Vietnam’s oldest national park and is located some distance from Tam Coc and Trang An. You’ll find tropical forests, walking trails and a variety of fascinating plants and wildlife.
One special place in the park is the Endangered Primate Rescue Center. This rescue centre works to protect endangered primates, including animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. During a guided visit, you can learn more about the animals and the work of the centre. Tours can be arranged through the national park’s visitor centre.
Where to Stay in Ninh Binh with Kids?
The choice of accommodation really makes a difference in Ninh Binh. Many places to stay are surrounded by beautiful green landscapes, rice fields and limestone mountains. You’ll find small hotels, bungalows and resorts with swimming pools. This is ideal when travelling with children, especially as it can get quite hot when you’re out exploring.
The Goat Boutique Resort: Our Recommendation
We stayed at The Goat Boutique Resort, and it was perhaps the most beautiful accommodation of our entire trip through Vietnam. The resort consists of simple but charming little houses built against a mountainside. There are goats roaming on the mountain, which is where the name comes from.
The houses are simply furnished, but they’re also very affordable. And honestly, we had everything we needed. There’s a lovely swimming pool where the children can cool off after a hot day, as well as a small playground and an open field where they can play football.

The resort has its own restaurant, where you can enjoy good Vietnamese food. They can also cater to children if you’d prefer something a little simpler. You can borrow bicycles, including children’s bikes and bikes with child seats. Massages are available too, and we really enjoyed treating ourselves to one.
The staff are incredibly friendly and happy to help arrange transport or excursions. For us, this was the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring. We would absolutely recommend The Goat Boutique Resort if you’re visiting Ninh Binh with children!
Other Lovely Places to Stay in Ninh Binh
Besides The Goat Boutique Resort, we had several other accommodations on our shortlist. These are places we seriously considered ourselves and would definitely look into if our first choice is fully booked:
- Nature Garden Eco Lodge Ninh Binh – worth considering if you’d like to stay in a peaceful, green setting.
- Muong Village Ninh Binh – a lovely option to add to your search for accommodation surrounded by nature.
- Tam Coc Serenity Hotel & Bungalow – a good choice if you’d like to stay in the Tam Coc area.
- Coco Island Resort Ninh Binh – a beautiful luxury accommodation option.
Take a good look at the photos, facilities and location before booking. In Ninh Binh, the location can make quite a difference to how easily you can reach restaurants, attractions and cycling routes.
Nice Restaurants in Ninh Binh with Kids
Around Tam Coc, you’ll find surprisingly many lovely restaurants. You can enjoy local Vietnamese dishes, but there are also places serving pizza, pasta and other Western meals. That’s handy when travelling with children, especially if they fancy something a little different.
Here are a few restaurants worth checking out:
- Forest Sunset Bar & Restaurant – a lovely spot by the water, particularly nice for dinner in the evening.
- 1990 Restaurant – a great choice if you’re looking for local Vietnamese food.
- Chef Dung Restaurant – a cosy waterside restaurant with pretty lighting in the evening.
- Puong Restaurant – a nice place for lunch, also located by the water.
- Village Garden Restaurant & Coffee – a good option if you’re in the mood for Western food or pizza.
- An Tam Coc Restaurant & Coffee – a lovely spot to stop for a coffee or a bite to eat.
- Mami Restaurant Vietnamese Cuisine – a restaurant with a charming courtyard.
There are plenty of options, so you won’t have to go far to find somewhere to eat each evening. You can also ask your accommodation for recommendations for their favourite local restaurants.

Getting Around Ninh Binh: How to Get Around
We mainly used Grab. It’s similar to Uber and allows you to easily book a car through an app. Simply enter your destination, see the price in advance and avoid having to negotiate with a taxi driver. It’s also relatively inexpensive.
You can also arrange transport through your hotel or resort. In the area, you’ll often find drivers approaching you to ask whether you need a ride or would like to book an excursion. This can be useful if you want to visit several attractions in one day.
For shorter distances, we found cycling ideal. Many accommodations offer bicycles, and some also have children’s bikes or child seats. Especially around Tam Coc, cycling is a wonderful way to explore the surroundings.
How Many Days Do You Need in Ninh Binh?
We stayed in Ninh Binh for three nights and found this was generally enough time to visit the main attractions. You could, for example, spend one day exploring Trang An and Hang Mua, another day cycling around the area, and still have some time to relax at your accommodation.
Looking back, though, we would happily have stayed a little longer. Ninh Binh isn’t just a destination where you tick off the sights. It’s the peaceful atmosphere, beautiful scenery and lovely places to stay that make it such a wonderful spot to slow down during a trip through Vietnam. If you’d also like to visit Cuc Phuong National Park or spend more time exploring Bai Dinh and the surrounding area, four nights would certainly be worthwhile.

Practical Tips for Visiting Ninh Binh with Kids
Be Prepared for the Heat
It was quite hot during our outings. The climb to Hang Mua can be particularly challenging in the sun. Try to plan more active activities for early in the morning and bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat.
Choose Accommodation with a Swimming Pool
It might sound like a luxury, but with children it’s lovely to be able to go for a swim after a day of exploring. We found the swimming pool at The Goat Boutique Resort to be a real bonus.
Make Time for Cycling
You don’t have to arrange an excursion or take a taxi everywhere. Exploring by bike is actually one of the best ways to discover the quiet roads, rice fields and small villages.
Visit Trang An Early in the Day
The boat trip is popular and can get quite busy. Setting off early helps you avoid some of the crowds and the hottest part of the day.
Use Grab for Getting Around
It’s an easy way to get around without having to rent a scooter yourself. We particularly appreciated this when travelling with children.

Combining Ninh Binh with the Rest of Your Vietnam Trip
Ninh Binh is a great destination to combine with Hanoi and other places in Northern Vietnam. It’s about a two-hour journey from Hanoi. From there, you can continue toCat Ba and Ha Long Bay, or travel further north towards Sapa.
