If you’re traveling to Bali, as a Dutch citizen, you don’t need a visa if you stay for less than 30 days. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you need to apply for a visa at the Indonesian embassy in The Hague or upon arrival at the airport in Bali. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months upon arrival. Always check the website of the Dutch government to see if there have been any changes to this policy: www.nederlandwereldwijd.nl
The flight to Bali from the Netherlands takes an average of about 16 to 18 hours, depending on the layover and the airline. You can easily book your tickets to Balionline. If you prefer to have everything arranged for you, you can also book a package holiday to Bali.
It’s wise to choose a flight with a night schedule so the children can sleep on the plane. Make sure to bring plenty of entertainment for the flight, such as books, games, or a tablet with movies or games. Also, check out our blog about flying with a baby when traveling to Bali with an infant.
Bali is in a different time zone than the Netherlands, which means you’ll experience jet lag. In the summer, the time difference is 6 hours, while in winter, Bali is 7 hours ahead. It’s wise to gradually adjust the children to the new time zone before departure. For example, try shifting their bedtime gradually. During the flight, try to sleep as much as possible and adjust your routine as soon as you arrive in Bali. Make sure not to over-schedule the first few days and take it easy, allowing everyone to acclimate to the new environment and time difference.

Vaccinations are not mandatory for Bali. However, it is advisable to get vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B, as well as DTP. For peace of mind, contact the GGD or your doctor to find out which vaccinations are recommended in your situation.
In Bali, we made extensive use of the Grab app, the Asian equivalent of Uber. With this app, you can easily arrange a taxi or scooter at a fair price (read: incredibly cheap by Western standards) without having to negotiate with local drivers. In 2022, we paid about 30 euros for an entire day! A Grab driver is happy to take you around for the whole day and doesn’t mind waiting while you visit a sight or eat at a restaurant. We sometimes felt a bit guilty and often gave a generous tip. The competition on the island is fierce, so everyone appreciates every ride they can get!
Be sure to enter the correct location and ask the driver for directions if he is not sure where to go.
There are many accommodations in Bali. We rented a villa with a private pool for a week, which was wonderful! If you’re also looking for such a villa, keep in mind that many villas are open and have direct access to the pool. This isn’t very practical with children who haven’t yet learned to swim, as it means you need to keep an eye on them 24/7. Accidents can happen easily! Therefore, we made sure to choose a villa that could be secured. This way, the kids only had access to the pool when we were outside.
,We stayed in Villa Cassia Ubud, but there are many other great family-friendly accommodations in Bali. Here you can find them all.
When planning your trip to Bali, there are several ways to book your stay and activities. If you prefer to arrange everything yourself, you can easily find accommodations that suit your needs on Booking.com. For unique excursions and tours GetYourGuide is an excellent choice. Would you rather have everything arranged at once? Then TUI offers complete packages for a worry-free vacation. Looking for more flexibility and want to customize your trip? Bali has a tropical climate, which means it can be warm and humid. Make sure your children drink plenty of water and wear a hat or cap to protect themselves from the sun. Dress in light and breathable clothing, and apply sunscreen regularly to prevent burns. If you’re traveling with young children, it’s wise to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day or seek shade. Cool off in the pool or the sea, and avoid excessive exertion during the heat.
In Bali, two-round pin sockets are used, operating at 230 volts. It’s handy to bring a universal adapter so you can use and charge all your electronic devices.
Bali is generally a safe destination, but it’s wise to be aware of the safety situation and potential risks. For instance, it’s advisable to store valuables securely and not to wear them too openly. Additionally, consider which areas to avoid with children and follow general safety guidelines.
In Bali, it’s important to consider the local culture and customs. For example, wearing modest clothing is appreciated when visiting temples and other religious sites. It’s also customary to remove your shoes before entering a home or temple. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the local culture and customs so you can engage respectfully and teach your children about these practices.
It’s also wise to assemble a first aid kit before departure, including items like band-aids, pain relievers, and anti-diarrheal medication. This way, you can enjoy your vacation in Bali worry-free!
Finally, it’s important to enjoy your time together and be flexible. Bali is a beautiful destination but can sometimes be chaotic, especially in traffic. As long as you’re open to new experiences and don’t stick too rigidly to a tight schedule, you’ll have a fantastic time. Have fun!
